Sky Poker UK Online Poker Series (UKOPS) will start today – as the inaugural event, the virtual series will promise some high guarantees over eight events running until 6 November.

The UKOPS will feature a mixture of events including a Bounty Hunter tournament, a Pot Limit Omaha one rebuy/one add-on, a £500 +£30 High Roller event and a £20 +£2 turbo rebuy tournament.

Poker star, Dave Bland, who will most likely be there kicking everyone else’s butts, said: “The UKOPS is the natural follow-on from the Sky Poker Tour. With such a popular live event series it was only a matter of time before Sky put its name to a huge online series too, and we hope the first ever UKOPS will cater to high roller and recreational players from all around the UK.”

Event #1 is the £100 +£10 Bounty Hunter tournament that has a £20,000 guarantee attached to it. For each opponent a player knocks out they receive 75% of their bounty in cash and the other 25% is added to their own head, making them more attractive to attack.

Sky Poker‘s grand finale will take place at 1900 on Sunday 6 November, Event number 8, the £200 +£20 Main Event, with a £40,000 guarantee, with players starting the main event with 8,000 chips playing to a 15-minute clock.

Blinds will start at 15/30 then go up very gradually to 20/40, 30/60 and 40/80. The poker series assures that by the time players have been at the virtual felt for two hours they will still only be paying 125/250 in blinds.

For those wanting to have a go who don’t want to risk their life savings, then there will be many satillites running daily, which start at £1.20 a go. Cheap as chips! Well..

Adelson inducted; Caesars’ Loveman makes casino pitch to Japanese lawmakers

Las Vegas Sands (LVS) bigwig Sheldon Adelson was inducted into the American Gaming Association’s Gaming Hall of Fame (along with the Blue Man Group and local chef Charlie Palmer) on Tuesday night at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas. It’s been a pretty good week for Adelson, currently riding high on his company’s boffo Q3 results, to which operations in the white-hot Asian gambling hubs of Macau and Singapore contributed the lion’s share of LVS’ 26.2% revenue growth.

Caesars Entertainment CEO Gary Loveman has yet to receive his Gaming Hall of Fame induction notice, but we’re sure his infamous decision not to apply for a Macau gaming license way back when had nothing to do with the omission. Besides, Gary’s keen to make amends for his earlier shortsightedness by pressing hard to make inroads into untapped Asian markets, including Japan. Inside Asian Gaming reports (by way of Japanese consultants Gaming Capital Management) that on Friday, Oct. 28, Loveman made a 15-minute pitch to the members of the Integrated Resort Diet Members Association, a cross-party confab of politicians keen to bring destination casinos to Japan’s shores.

Among the 120-odd people at Friday’s meeting were 20 Diet members (out of a total 722 representatives in Japan’s legislature). Sakihito Ozama, a member of the governing Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) suggested the ETA for passage of Japan’s draft legislation on casinos could be reduced from two years to one due to (a) the need for economic stimulus in the wake of the country’s recent ecological disasters, and (b) the desire to avoid getting scooped by South Korean politicians, who are contemplating climbing aboard the integrated resort money train themselves.

All party reps in attendance voiced the opinion that the casino bill needed to come up for debate during the Diet’s current extraordinary session, i.e. before January. If/when that bill meets with a favorable vote, Toshihiko Satake, policy secretary for the DPJ’s Issei Koga, predicted “casino operations will be ready in three years.” Assuming that all transpires according to plan, and Loveman manages to avoid being outmaneuvered (again) by the wily Adelson for a Japanese gaming license, Gary might yet find his name on the AGA’s Hall of Fame ballot. Perhaps even before Céline Dion gets inducted.

Even Quads Can Bring Royal Treatment

Royal flushes at video poker are fairly rare events, occurring once every 40,000 hands or so, depending on the game.Whether you're playing online or offline, chances are you can find a slot game with a jackpot.
That's because a high frequency of smaller wins and high payback percentages, along with a skill factor unmatched on the slots--is what keeps players coming back.

Some games have an additional factor 
A large secondary jackpot that hits much more often than royal flushes. If you're playing basic Jacks or Better, the 125-credit payoff for five credits wagered isn't going to get the juices flowing. But what if those quads or worth 250 credits, Or 800, Or 1,200, Or 2,000, All for hands that come up much more often than royals. Makes a difference, doesn't it?

Double Bonus Poker, for instance, gives you 250 credits for five wagered on four of a kind, 5s through Kings --- and the quads come up about once per 622 hands, giving the player reasonable hope in any session. It has even larger payoffs on four 2s, 3s or 4s (400 coins, about once per 1,900 hands) and four Aces (800 coins, once per 5,000 hands). Double Double Bonus Poker, one of the most popular games around, kicks it up a notch with a 2,000-coin jackpot -- half the royal flush payoff -- on four Aces accompanied by a 2, 3 or 4. That comes up about once every 16,000 hands, 2.5 times as often as a royal.

One favorite game of mine is Super Aces. The secondary jackpot here is 2,000 coins on four Aces, with no low-card kicker needed. For a quarter players, that's a $500 payoff on a hand that occurs about once per 4,200 hands -- nearly 10 times as often as a royal flush.

The full-pay version returns 99.8 percent with expert play and has the following pay table per coin bet: royal flush, 250 (rises to 4,000 coins for a five-coin bet); straight flush, 250; four Aces, 400; four 2s, 3s or 4s, 80; four 5s through Kings, 50; full house, 8; flush, 5; straight, 4; three of a kind, 3; two pair, 1; pair of Jacks or better, 1. If full houses pay only 7-for-1, Super Aces returns 98.7 percent with expert play; drop that full house payback to 6-for-1 and the overall return drops to 97.7 percent.

Strategy requires a few adjustments to account for that big payoff on Aces. Let's try a few sample hands in full-pay Super Aces.
Ace of hearts, Ace of clubs, 2 of clubs, 3 of clubs, 4 of clubs: In most video poker games, we'll break up a pair of Aces to hold four parts of a straight flush. That's even true in Double Double Bonus Poker, with its 2,000-coin jackpot on four Aces with a low card. Not so in Super Aces, where any four-Ace hand nets that big payoff. Here, holding the pair of Aces brings an average return of 12.03 coins per five coins wagered, while holding the four-card straight flush brings an expected return of 11.06 coins.

Ace of diamonds, Jack of clubs, 10 of clubs, 7 of clubs, 2 of hearts: There are four viable choices here--the lone Ace, Ace-Jack, the three-card double-inside straight flush, Jack-10-7 and the two-card royal, Jack-10. We'll choose differently according to which game and which pay table we're playing. In Super Aces, the lone Ace is the best choice, with an expected average return of 2.52 coins per five wagered, compared with 2.30 on Jack-10-7.

Ace of clubs, King of diamonds, Queen of hearts, 5 of spades, 2 of spades: With an eye on possible straights, we'll often keep King-Queen or Ace-King-Queen in other video poker games. Super Aces and Double Double Bonus Poker have something in common in that the Aces are valuable enough that with this start, we keep just the Ace. In Super Aces, the expected return on the Aces is 2.45 coins. The next best option in this game is either Ace-King or Ace-Queen, at an expected return of 2.24 coins. Those plays at least give us a shot at a miracle draw for the other three Aces. And the Aces are what this game is all about.

Beating the Bad Players

As poker continues to grow in popularity, the casino card rooms and internet poker sites have seen the influx of new players who want to give poker a try. Most of these new players have little or no knowledge of the game......other than the basic rules. Many of them have gotten all of their education from watching the tournaments on TV.
Some of these players with their TV education sit down in a Low Limit game and play the way the have seen players play the final table of a televised No Limit tournament. They think that they can win a low limit game by bluffing and rising and they play like maniacs. They are really easy to spot. The other type of players is a meeker type. They are weak passive players who will sit down in a game and play a lot of hands but rarely raise or fold.

Both the maniac and the passive players have something in common. They don’t know how to play the game properly. They rarely have any concept of starting hand requirements, pot odds or even how to read the board.  Some of them will use the any two will do strategy while others will wait for two suited cards. Many of the new players think that a single ace is the Holy Grail and constitutes a raise every time they have one. They will cold call rises with hopeless hands and chase all the way to the river looking for a miracle card.

The number of new players has actually been a double edge sword for the knowledgeable player. Bad players are profitable for good players. In low limit games, you will make more money from your opponent’s mistakes than you will from your own fancy play. This is because most of the new players are only interested in their own cards. Few of them even notice what type of hands the other players are playing.

In the long run a good player will beat the new clueless players; however, with all these new players in the game you will also suffer more bad beats than you would in a game full of skilled players. This has frustrated many veteran players. In the last few months, I have received numerous e-mails from players who have been used to winning and now all of a sudden find that they are getting clobbered by the new players in low limit games. They are angry that the damn new players don’t know how to play the game. They want to know what to do about it. Some of these players have even told me they have had heated arguments with the newbie players.

I have witnessed this at the tables where I play. I saw an argument break out that thought was going to turn into a physical altercation.  A player with pocket aces flopped a set and lost to a straight by a player who cold called a raise with 2-5 off suit. The “veteran” player started screaming obscenities at the new player who started yelling back that he had the right to play whatever cards he wanted to. The dealer finally got the players settled down but the player who suffered the bad beat continued making snide remarks about the new player. A few minutes later, the new player who had been donating money to the table got up and left the game. This is exactly what you don’t want to happen.

Bad players are overall losers. You don’t want to educate them at the table and you definitely don’t want to chase them away. There is a wealth of books, software and other information available to a player who wants to learn to play the game properly. If a new player wants to get his education by playing at the table in a live game, you should make sure that he “Pays” for this education by the money he will lose chasing down hopeless hands. Why would you want to give this player any “Free Advice” that he can use to beat you with in the future. When a player gets lucky and wins a bit pot you should tell him “nice hand” and encourage him to continue to play that way.

Sure, it hurts when you are on the receiving end of a bad beat but a good player knows how to control his emotions and not let it affect future hands. Avoid making any derogatory remakes aimed at the new player. If you are really upset get up and leave the able until you calm down. When you get angry, you are one step closer to going on tilt which can be devastating for you and your bankroll.

When you are playing in a game filled with new players you will need to make some adjustments to your strategy. You need to adjust your play based on the players in your game at the moment. If you are in a game with a lot of aggressive players, you will want to tighten up from early position. If you are in a passive game with a lot of loose players, you will want to play a few more hands. In a game with a lot of callers, you will win fewer pots but you will win more money in the pots that you do win. It is up to you to learn how to adjust your strategy to play and win against the new players.  Here are a few tips to help you in these types of games:

Play aggressively from early position with the big pairs but realize that they won’t hold up as often. Pocket Aces will win the majority of times against a small field but will only hold up about 35 percent of the time against a full table of calling stations.

Don’t try slow play or try to get fancy. Bet the best hand if you have it. The straight forward approach is usually the best as there are plenty of players who will call you. Make them pay. Why give them a free card if you don’t have to.

Don’t try to bluff. If you are in the game with even one calling station, you shouldn’t try to bluff. You will be called by some player who wants to keep you honest.

Play more connectors from late position. In a game with many players in the pot, your drawing hands go up in value. You will be getting correct odds to see the flop with these hands and when you do hit you will be rewarded with a good-sized pot.

Macau refuses to relax table growth limits

Macau’s casino business could makes its way elsewhere over the next decade after the government reiterated its stance on limiting table growth. Secretary for economy and finance, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, confirmed that the enclave’s government wouldn’t be loosening the 5,500-cap on live gaming tables. The agreement expires in 2013 and leaves room for only 121 tables over the next two years. Tam stated, “We said last year that the number of gaming tables will be maintained at 5,500 [until 2013]. It is still our goal to maintain that number and we are still on target.”

The comments don’t defeat the idea that it might be extended. Saying they are “still on target” leaves room for maneuver and if they see other nations capitalizing, it could be the signal to up their game and allow more tables. Under the current plan, table growth is limited to 3% each year. It means that further to the 121 tables that are up for grabs before 2013’s deadline there will be 165 allowed in the year following that and only small increases on that in the year’s following. Sands China has two casinos slated to open in 2012 and sweating is an understatement. Although we’re pretty sure if you’ve got a table you could get a hefty sum on eBay for it right now. They are rare after all.

Ultimately, the number of tables decreasing will drive operators elsewhere and once more markets open up around the Chinese coastline, it’s only a matter of time before Macau loses its luster. For now, it’s the market leader and will stay that way for some time. The thing about being the market leader in the world’s largest market is that within reason you can stick your finger up at any question. They might want to start thinking of a better solution at some point soon. Up until now they’ve done quite the job in regulating and this could all be part of the master plan.

Nevada online poker hearing later today

The Nevada Gaming Control Board holds a public consultation later today looking at a new regulation pertaining to the operation of interactive gaming. Nevada Gaming Commission New Regulation 5A will be up for public discussion this week ahead of the Commission holding its own hearing in two weeks time.

The hearings take place after last weeks’ announcement that amendments had been made to Internet poker regulations. These are to protect players and firms are required to cover player deposits in a “reserve,” 25% of which must be held in cash. The “federally-insured financial institution” holding the reserve must “reasonably protect” the money against debts the operator might have. Don’t want another Full Tilt on their hands.

Gaming Control Board member A.G. Burnett added: “I think player fund protection goes to a core responsibility we have. With land-based operators facing uncertain financial times, that has been an issue of focus for us. We need to ensure that player funds are protected adequately and we spend a lot of time and energy on that task.”

Further amendments include not allowing bots to participate by “reasonably” ensuring that a game is between humans only. Burnett explained: “I would hope that all operators would try to curtail players gaining an unfair advantage, and to especially stop any cheating activities. I think the term “reasonably” is simply there so that the Board and Commission can impose a certain standard of care on them in that regard.”

The meetings later this month are ahead of a possible adoption vote in early December and something may go ahead unless congress decides to bust through the back doors with its own federal legislation. From our point of view, if companies want the lane with less traffic it would be the intrastate one with federal legislation like a blocked carriageway i.e. nothing’s going to happen for some time yet.

Disney fights Florida gambling expansion

Aside from anti-gambling groups, the main hurdles that always make gambling expansion difficult are competing interests. This is again evident in the state of Florida.

With the state taking a long hard look at gambling expansion, competing interests are beginning to make their presence known in Central Florida’s $28 billion tourism industry over whether to embrace high-stakes gambling.

While casino executives are aggressively lobbying the Florida Legislature to build Las Vegas-style casino resorts in South Florida and Central Florida, tourism leaders feel they must follow suit or risk losing convention business to Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Competing interests are trying to shoot down the gambling expansion bid entirely.

Walt Disney World has historically aggressively opposed any efforts to expand gambling anywhere in Florida and yesterday, Disney made it clear that its stance hasn’t changed on the issue of gambling expansion.

Disney spokesman Mike Griffin said during a meeting with the Orlando Sentinel’s editorial board: “We really think it disagrees or conflicts with the family-friendly brand of Florida.” – Orlando Sentinel.

In other words, Disney wants to limit their competition for tourism dollars.

Disney has the backing of the anti-gambling group No Fun- excuse me, No Casinos Inc. It’s a group that Disney helps fund and thus keeps in their back pocket. Disney also has Mark Wilson, president of the Florida Chamber of Commerce backing them up. Wilson has said the chamber will fight any plans to expand gambling during the next legislative session, which begins Jan. 10.

According to Wilson: “This commercial casino gambling … is one of the biggest threats to the future of Florida that’s on the drawing board right now.” – Orlando Sentinel.

Little Three

Just a tick less important than the Big 4 is a grouping of items that I call the Little 3. But it doesn't mean they contribute only a little to your game plan. You'll see as we go along how important they are to your overall approach.The Little 3 is:

1. Theory
2. Logic
3. Trends

THEORY: Everyone who gambles should have an idea of what each gambling day will encompass. For instance, in Roulette will you play conservative or ag¬gressive? Surely you must have opinions as to how you should play. That opinion is called "theory." It is how you feel that particular game should be played, what systems offer you the least chance of losing, and what is the strongest money management method you can use. Jake Dajerc is a typical gambler. He bets for the sheer enjoyment of dropping money on the table and taking his best shot. Jake doesn't approach any game with even the slightest bit of a game plan. The only thing he can give you an opinion on is the cocktail waitress' legs and he'd probably foul that up too. My "theory" on how to approach gambling is very conservative. But I believe that is the only way you can win at gambling.

Maybe you'll like my "theory" or maybe you'll come up with your own! Good!!! I want you to do this. But you can't have a "theory" about something unless you know every single solitary facet of the game. Otherwise, who gives a rat's tail what your unproven opinion might be. "Theory" will be expanded on later, but keep it in the back of your mind.

LOGIC: Anything to do with gambling has a logical explanation. In blackjack is it logical to split two fours vs. the dealers' queen? Of course not   that's a stupid move and has no right being done. Is it logical in craps to bet on the don't pass when you are the shooter? Of course not, only an illogical approach to playing craps could cause a person to do it.

I'm going to give you an intelligent, 'logical'way to handle your Bankroll, play roulette, manage your money, and, most of all, how to logically use Discipline.
Maybe you won't like this logical approach, but it'll sure do wonders for your game and reduce your chances of losing.

TRENDS: Last, but surely not least, we have trends. Since it is so dominant a necessity, the whole next chapter is directed to it.

There you have the Little 3. As we progress through these pages, I hope you come up with a logical theory on how to handle Trends. It's all in the money management section, but start putting your own ideas together.

Trends

Everything in gambling is based on patterns of play. I sure as heck ain't smart enough to understand it, let alone explain it, but the acceptance of realizing that Trends occur in gambling over and over and over make me a disciplined player.
I don't give a rat's tail if you call them Trends or streaks, it all comes out to the same meaning. Everything in gambling is based on patterns of play.
My every gambling foray is based on following the Trend of the game I'm at, or pre setting which way I want to bet and then looking for a table that has the Trend following that pattern.

Let's explain that last paragraph so that I don't lose a majority of you this early in the book. Since we're talking about Roulette, let's say that will be our game on this particular day.

My play will be either:

1. Follow the Trend

2. Pre determined Set Pattern

If I choose number 1 I'll go to a table, chart which pattern is dominating, and make my bets in that area.

Suppose low numbers (1 18) come up on seven out of ten spins while I'm charting that table. My game plan will be to start betting on these low numbers.
If my game plan that day is no. 2, then I will pre¬determine my method of play. Let's say I decide on odd numbers to be my choice.
When I get to the Roulette section in the casino, my job will  be to chart tables untiI one of them shows a pre dominance of odd numbers appearing on the wheel. That's the game I'll play at, but only if odd numbers are in command.

Both of these methods will be banged around in depth later on, but I want you conditioned for strict controlled play.
Trends belong with the Little 3, but it's so powerful a tool that it deserves it's own chapter.

Jake Dajerc is a typical jerk when it comes to gambling. His idea of playing Roulette is to wait for something to happen three times in a row and then bet that the opposite will occur,
Let's say 14, 17 and 2 showed three times in a row  all low numbers. Dajerc will bet that a high number will show (19 36) and make his wager.
Maybe 28 will pop up. Our hero acts like he's discovered a lobe of gold in his left ear. Then he dislocates his elbow patting himself on the back.
You'll get these instances where your system will fall according to plan. But just one tiny streak of 8 straight small numbers showing and Jake will be in jeopardy, especially if he's using a double up method of betting.

Trends dominate in gambling! First, you gotta realize this fact. Next, you gotta find the table showing a strong Trend. Then you gotta know how to take ad¬vantage of it.

American Gaming Association agrees with Internet Gaming hearing

Just over a month after releasing a code of conduct for companies operating in any federal online poker market – the American Gaming Association (AGA) has issued a statement to coincide with a special hearing held by the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade Subcommittee, which was entitled ‘Internet Gaming: Is there a Safe Bet?’

In the press release, the President and Chief Executive Officer of AGA, Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jnr, claims that Tuesday’s hearing made it clear that a ‘safe bet’ would be to allow states, following federal guidelines to license and regulate online poker in the United States.

Reiterating his “but what about the children” meme, he said: “Such action would protect U.S. consumers, keep children from gambling on the Internet, and provide the tools law enforcement needs to shut down illegal Internet gambling operators. It would also create new jobs and tax revenue at a time when our country sorely needs both.”

Adding: “Testimony heard today and other testimony presented in writing, such as ours, demonstrates that new technology and processes used in ecommerce have been successfully adapted in jurisdictions where Internet gambling is legal, such as Great Britain, France, Italy and provinces in Canada, to keep minors from betting online and prevent illegal activities.”

Fahrenkopf, who supports state licensing and regulation following federal guidelines on internet poker as it is “substantially different than other forms of gaming” is hoping to get the federal bill passed by early 2013. He continued in the statement to explain that poker is a game that a vast number of Americans have historically played and still do so. “Second, unlike other forms of Internet gambling, poker is primarily a game of skill. And, poker is played between or among individuals, whereas in other forms of Internet gambling the customer is playing against the ‘house’,” he said.

But as Calvin Ayre has said in the past; isn’t online gaming a complementary of land based gaming, and vice versa? The biggest trend between the two at the moment is convergence: that of them moving towards one another. Few operators still fear that readily available online poker could turn their casinos into ghost towns, even though industry notables like to state otherwise.

Regulators seize SunFirst Bank; Buffer was warned about FTP pre-Black Friday

SunFirst Bank – the St. George, Utah financial institution that featured prominently in the Black Friday indictments – has been seized by state regulators. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the Department of Financial Institutions has appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) as receiver. In addition to enduring the woes facing most US financial institutions since the bottom dropped out of the markets in 2008, SunFirst was also under scrutiny for its dealings with St. George philanthropist/conman Jeremy Johnson and the payment processors who convinced vice-chairman John Campos to let them make a $10m ‘investment’ in SunFirst – and $20K as a personal ‘bonus’ for Campos – in exchange for the bank processing online poker transactions on behalf of the companies indicted on Black Friday. By Sept. 30, SunFirst held capital reserves totaling only 2% of assets. Another bank has stepped in to buy most of SunFirst’s remaining assets, but the FDIC is personally hanging on to $15m “in deposits that may be subject to external litigation involving SunFirst Bank.”

Ultimate Fighting Championship ring announcer Bruce Buffer, the ‘veteran voice of the octagon’, gave a remarkably candid interview to PokerNews this week. Buffer is a familiar figure in poker circles, having won last year’s Hustler Grand Slam of Poker, had the poker room at the Luxor in Las Vegas branded with his name, and was a former ‘Friend of Full Tilt’ before FTP’s world caved in on Black Friday. Buffer told PokerNews that he had a bankroll in the “healthy five figures” stuck in limbo on FTP, although he admits that, unlike most players, he’s fortunate enough to be in the financial position where he “can take a loss” if he has to.

Also unlike most other players on FTP, Buffer was apparently given advance notice that all was not well in FTP-ville. “I actually was told, through some attorney friends of mine, like three months previous [to Black Friday], not to keep a lot of money in Full Tilt … I was a very loyal supporter because I was on the team, but they told me to take the money out because they were going to have some issues, but I couldn’t see what those issues could be, and lo and behold the issues came down and surprised us all.” This suggestion that FTP insiders were quietly divvying up the life jackets before the rest of the passengers realized the ship was taking on water isn’t likely to surprise many of FTP’s aggrieved players, but it will likely keep them ‘ready to rumble’ for a good while longer.

Online poker in the US? What a disaster.

Amazing how much the world can change in only six months, isn’t it? Libyan war – now over, Quaddafi dead and gone. Egypt – government toppled virtually without a shot fired (but millions of rounds of tweets expended). The leader for the GOP presidential nomination is Herman Cain. For now. The Philadelphia Phillies did not win the World Series – impossible, but true.

And the firms that we’re the biggest driving force (besides Harrah’s) behind the i-poker lobby in Washington DC have now been drummed completely out of the US (as in the case of PokerStars) or worse, alleged to be Ponzi-scheming pariahs hoping to be bailed out (not yet literally) by a French sugar daddy looking for a bargain (of course, Full Tilt).

To quote Steve Jobs, “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.”

There has been a great deal of ink spilled, virtual and otherwise, running over this sad story ad nauseam. The aftermath, entirely predictable, remains largely a dual track of naked opportunism (see Ryan, Jim, and his “red line” slide from the latest bwin.party Tour of America, as well as their “if/then” deal with MGM and Boyd), and the “gimme my damn money” cacophony of players looking for their missing bankrolls and filing class-action lawsuits.

There is a story, though, that that has been largely missed, specifically related to the “blame game” that kicked into full gear not long after the DOJ and ICE logos commanded those .com domains.

Who is to blame for this predicament that the US online poker world finds itself in? Is it Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Howard “the Professor” Lederer (an ironic nickname now, given the circumstance)? Did Isai bring the house down, legal opinion in hand and (alleged) zombie banks churning out processing for “travel” and “prizes” and “whateverwecancallitbesidesgambling”? Was it, as many of you have called him, “that goddamned Preet Bharara” sitting up there in Manhattan, piloting an all-powerful asset forfeiture and subpoena machine at the SDNY office of DOJ?

Well, yeah. Duh.

But there is a party that has contributed to this disaster that has thus far escaped blame, skated without any responsibility pinned on them, though I’d argue that they share significantly in what has transpired.

I’m talking about, of course, the players. Yes YOU, poker player. It’s your fault, too.

Now, before the click-clack of keyboards powering the “Joe Brennan is a &%$*#!” thread on twoplustwo commence in earnest, I beg your indulgence for just a moment before you flame me beyond recognition. There is something to this.

You see, US poker players want their processing NOW. Immediately. And for the most part, that’s what they got. Deposits as low at $10.00 and payouts as low as $0.01 (I kid you not; read the civil complaint) were handled within 24 hours. Anything slower than that, and complaints would fan out across the forums, and word-of-mouth about alleged slow-paying would result in immediate attention from the top firms, to make sure the players’ expectations of fast credit/payment were met.

And it was those expectations that contributed to the Black Friday meltdown of the US-facing online poker industry.

Especially after the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006, when reliable payment options for operators were drying up, players responded by wanting money even faster than before. Fear of getting their funds caught in the middle of one of those well-publicized processor busts drove players to increase their expectations of fast payouts precisely at a time when the industry could no longer reasonably (and legally) keep up.

Poker players, in particular amongst online gamblers, treated their accounts like ATM machines. A large percentage of those that did earn at the tables immediately withdrew their winnings, regardless of how small (note that the previous $1.00 payout requests by CWs were not refused, as they were commonplace).

This put Stars and Tilt in an awkward position, of which they were both fully aware. If both firms (and yes, AP/UB…whatever) were intent on satisfying the increasingly unreasonable expectation of players for instant transactions, they would not be able to accomplish it with offshore processing. The processing would have to come from within the US. With UIGEA, that was an increasingly risky proposition, as evidenced by the targeting of US-based processors starting in 2009.

Both companies were in a power dive. The Earth was racing toward them. They could see it. Yet they didn’t pull up. Why?

Because it became a game of chicken.

The first operator that pulled up, and pulled out of US-based processing, would be yielding a “competitive advantage” to the other firm. Think of it: Firm #1 says, screw it, we’re putting the company and the players as risk here, so no more US-based processing, which means no more “instant” deposits or payouts.

How does Firm #2 respond? By shouting to the rooftops of the world, “Firm #1 won’t give you instant payouts or deposits. WE STILL DO!!! Open an account now with us, and f—– Firm #1?.

And the rest is history, my friends.

Oh sure, maybe the poker operators could have worked together (after all, they did work together in DC, right) to change the expectations of the players, and get them to understand that in a post-UIGEA world, they’d all have to get used to waiting a bit for their processing. But no one ever got rich telling you guys to “eat your peas”. The Internet is an instant gratification medium. Waiting is not something people accept anymore.

So, there you have it. The poker companies (allegedly) broke the law so that they could process players’ funds. Players were unwilling to change; even as the DOJ made it clear they were targeting US processors. Black Friday was a surprise only if you remained wilfully ignorant of everything the DOJ said and did for two years (BTW, all a result of a major uptick in enforcement activity during the Obama administration, for those of you who still erroneously think this is a partisan issue).

Of course, Jesus and the Professor shouldn’t have been paying themselves dividends out of your deposits (allegedly). Of course, it seems a ridiculous “horse out of the barn” situation regarding the US and Internet gambling, with no end in sight. Of course, players can be better “protected” were the activity to be licensed and regulated.

But don’t act surprised that this all happened, poker players. Mr. Bharara telegraphed this punch for going on two years, and you kept playing like everything was OK. You have to assume part of the blame, even as we acknowledge that you shouldn’t get screwed out of your money. With so many parties circling around it, though, don’t expect the get much back, if any.

Churchill Downs success fuelled by online; Borgata loses out to Irene; Dover Downs woes pile up

Churchill Downs Incorporated is becoming increasing reliant on the online side of their business. Net revenue for the company was up 13% to $166.4m for the quarter and it was partly due online success. Twin-spires.com saw a wagering increase of 4.2% as net revenues for online hit £42m, an increase of 7%. It was over the year to date that performance was most impressive with net revenue showing an increase of 43% to $125.3m.

It has been over a year since they merged their Twin-spires.com site with YouBet.com in a controversial deal. It seems as if all the legal wrangling was worth it. CDI Chairman and CEO Robert L. Evans commented: “Once again, the decline in net revenues and EBITDA—excluding those Trust Fund proceeds—in our Racing Operations was more than offset by significant gains in our Online and Gaming businesses.”

The group was also thankful to the Harlow’s casino business it acquired last year that earned them a tidy $13.4m. That’ll wipe the collective smile from the horses’ faces.

The Borgata lost $10million in revenue thanks to Hurricane Irene. The storm shut down Atlantic City for three days in August and the losses have been felt everywhere. Paul Chakmak, CEO at owners Boyd Gaming, reiterated that the casino would have show increases in Q3 had it not been for the storm. Atlantic City continues to falter with monthly revenues declining consecutively for over three years. Borgata is the best in Atlantic City meaning that it’s like being the best team in last year’s NFC West.

Things aren’t much better in Delaware and this was a point rammed home by Dover Downs’ latest results. Gaming revenues were down 8.3% to $54.9m year-on-year for Q3 and our old friend Irene was being blamed here as well. It’s led us to the conclusion that this Bonfire Night the East Coast’s casino industry will be using Irene. Earlier this week COO at Dover Down Ed Sutor told a local radio station that an “annual license fee of $6,750,000” should be “eliminated.” We’re just surprised no one else has been out to get Irene. Poor bitch.

Leave your frustrations in the casino; don’t take them out on your friends, on your loved ones or on yourself. Hollywood Casino helps build while Hoosier Lottery wastes taxpayer’s money

The Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg is making an example of how a casino can help give back and build the prestige of a community. The Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg and the city of Lawrenceburg have struck a $50 million deal to build a downtown convention center and hotel complex, scheduled to open in spring 2013.

Plans for the 235,000-square-foot facility in Lawrenceburg include a 180-room hotel, an 18,000-square-foot concert hall and exhibition space, a 7,500-square-foot ballroom and meeting space and a 150-seat restaurant and bar. The complex is expected to compete with Cincinnati’s casino but it is also intended to build up the city of Lawrenceburg.

Mayor William Cunningham said: “This helps revitalize downtown, which needs something to draw people and foot traffic…The benefits to the city clearly warrant the financial contributions we’re making to bring this project to fruition.” – Chicago Tribune.

The city is on the hook for $25 million while the casino will pay 4 percent interest on its 20-year loan from the city.

The give and take relationship is a change from what the Hoosier Lottery pulled on tax payers, when Hoosier Lottery Director Kathryn Densborn was forced to resign after coming under fire for using tax payer’s money to move the lottery to an upscale new headquarters in Indianapolis. Lottery officials were forced to admit in the wake of public backlash that some of the spending, including a new workout gym that cost more than $25,000, didn’t comply with Department of Administration standards.

Well, no kidding.

Governor Mitch Daniels has since appointed Megan Ornellas as interim executive director of the Hoosier Lottery following Densborn’s resignation last week.

... clearly holds the advantage. You will win your bet if a 2 or 3 rolls, but lose your bet if a 7 or 11 rolls - just the opposite from the pass line. (On the don’t pass the 12 is a 'push'). The 2/3 combination rolls 3 times (in 36 sample rolls) while the 7/11 combination rolls 8 times. So, with your bet in the don’t pass box, you are favored to lose by an 8 to 3 margin.

To make matters worse, if the point does get established, you might want to make three don’t come bets. This 8 to 3 casino advantage, is present not only for the initial don’t pass bet, but the three additional don’t come bets as well.

However, once you get past the come-outs, you hold the advantage on any number - either for the don’t pass or the don’t come. So your don’t pass plus three don’t comes could be highly profitable, if only there was some way of protecting your initial bets.

The easiest way to protect your don’t come bet is to temporarily add odds to your don’t pass bet. If your don’t pass is $10, you should back it up with $10 odds for one roll only, while you place a $10 don’t come bet. If the seven hits, you lose your don’t come bet but win on the don’t pass (plus odds), so you come out ahead. After your first don’t come is established, you can remove the odds on the don’t pass, which was there to protect the first don’t come bet from a losing on a possible seven.

Now, you’re home free. Your second don’t come can be placed without a money loss. If the seven rolls now, you will win your first don’t come, lose the second, and win your don’t pass. If another point number rolls you can make a third don’t come bet also.

If you don’t like adding odds to your don’t pass bet, you can just reduce your second don’t come bet to protect the first one. For example, if your first don’t come is $10, make your second only $5. This way if the seven rolls you are still ahead by $5.

For an easy hedge bet on the don’t pass bet itself, you could try a $2 bet on the hardway number if the point is 4, 6, 8 or 10. If the point rolled is 4 or 10, you would lose your $10 don’t pass but win $14 ($2 at 7:1). If the point rolled is 6 or 8, you would lose your $10 don’t pass but win $18 ($2 at 9:1).

So when you play on the don’t side, use the don’t pass odds only as a hedge for your first don’t come bet. Why not give this a try the next time you play 'on the dark side'.

How to Approach Gambling

I think gambling is the second most popular outlet for people in this country. It ranks right behind that three letter word that begins with 'S' as to it's mode of popularity: sleeping! So I'm a little weak in spelling. And for you dirty minds, it'll stop you from trying to guess what I'm gon¬na say.
Gambling is looked upon by many people as an outlet from their everyday routine. And a lot more peo¬ple view it as a way to make that big killing.
Both theories are way, way out of line:

1.    If you get your jollys losing money at gambl¬ing, it's pretty obvious it don't take much to amuse you. Getting a hot foot from your playful 14 year old son must give you a bellyful of laughs.

2.    And you people who think gambling will eventually fill your pockets with gold, should have your clocks tuned into reality. You got a better chance digging for oilwells in your driveway.

I have a friend   Lotta Rhee  who swears that one day she will hit the lottery and retire to that dream house where the Buffalo roam and the skys are not cloudy all day.
Lotta's got a lot of problems if she thinks she has a great chance of being the millionaire recipient of a lot¬tery drawing. But then again, anyone who wants some big ugly buffalo meandering around their living room, has a strangle hold on illogical thinking in the first place. So I ain't gonna try and reach her with an intelligent outlook on gambling.

But maybe some of you will be touched by my words. Maybe you'll get some insight into how you should approach this very dangerous undertaking.
Painting is an art. Playing a musical instrument is an art. Dancing is an art. So is playing basketball or any sport. All of these things must be perfected, studied and mastered until they can be performed in such a way that they give you pleasure. Gambling is an art. Why should it be approached in any other manner than with an attempt to be perfect!

As we breeze through these chapters, I will show you the proper way to gamble   to hold your losses down.
So maybe you won't like my conservative ap¬proach. That's alright. My friend Lotta Rhee will save you a place in line to get your tickets for the Lottery. Since she has first crack at the buffalo species, maybe you can set your sights on a roomful of cantaloupes  or is it antelopes that like to play.

Whatever, I just want to change your silly, ridiculous approach to gambling and show you a logical way to grind out some consistent returns.
Maybe you won't be shoveling big deposits into your bank account, but it beats shoveling up the deposits of a herd of antelopes and buffalo, but that's another story.
